Robert M. Dohrmann   return to list

Mr. Dohrmann is a 1962 graduate of the University of Southern California School of Law. Mr. Dohrmann is equally accomplished in trial litigation and appellate work in employment, employee benefits, and commercial litigation. As lead counsel in City of Los Angeles v. Manhart, he had the singular distinction of litigating the case from the initial drafting of the complaint to arguing it successfully before the United States Supreme Court in 1978. In Manhart, the first in the field, Mr. Dohrmann successfully argued for the plaintiffs that employers must treat male and female employees equally concerning pension contributions and benefits under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, even though statistics show that women generally live longer than men.

In Probe v. State Teachers' Retirement System, 780 F.2d 776 (9th Cir. 1985), Mr. Dohrmann represented teachers in a successful challenge to the State Teachers' Retirement System's use of sex-segregated actuarial tables in calculating benefits under its retirement plan. Both the Manhart and Probe cases resulted in substantial attorneys' fees awards, fully reimbursing the clients' fee expenditures.

Mr. Dohrmann has tried cases in federal and state court and served as lead counsel in numerous arbitration and administrative hearings. He chaired the Labor and Employment Law Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association in 1982-83 and its annual Labor Law Symposium in 1982 and 1984. He served as President of the Southern California Chapter of the Industrial Relations Research Association in 1986-87 and was Chair of the American Bar Association Labor and Employment Law Section in 1997-98. He is a frequent lecturer on labor law topics. He is a Fellow and has served on the Board of Governors of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers (President, 2003) and is listed in the publication "The Best Lawyers in America." In 2005, he was named a "Southern California Super Lawyer" by Los Angeles Magazine.
